Hippo kills villager in Thika

A rogue hippo killed a man and injured another in a village in central Kenya Wednesday evening. Peter Kariuki, 35, was walking home in Giciiki village in Kilimambogo, Thika East District in the company of John Gathuru, 57, when the hippo attacked them at around 7pm Wednesday.

Mr Kariuki died on the spot while Mr Gathuru, who suffered severe injuries in his back, ribs and mouth was rushed to hospital. He is currently recuperating at the Naidu Hospital, Thika. Shocked villagers suspect the animal could have strayed from the hippo-infested Athi River.
